Cut vs. Shape: An Important Distinction
In diamond grading, cut and shape are often used interchangeably — but they refer to two different things. Shape describes the outline of the diamond as viewed from above (round, oval, pear, etc.). Cut refers to the quality of the craftsmanship: how precisely the facets are angled, aligned, and polished to interact with light. A diamond can be a beautiful shape but a poor cut — and that distinction has a profound effect on its beauty.
Diamond Shapes
Each shape has a distinct facet geometry that influences how light moves through the stone:
- Round Brilliant: The most studied and optimized shape in diamond cutting. Its 57–58 facets are mathematically engineered to maximize light return. It consistently achieves the highest brilliance grades and is the benchmark against which all other shapes are measured.
- Princess: A square or rectangular shape with pointed corners and a modified brilliant facet pattern. It retains more of the rough diamond than a round cut, making it cost-efficient, while still delivering strong brilliance.
- Oval: An elongated brilliant cut that distributes carat weight across a larger surface area, making it appear larger face-up than a round of the same weight. Its elongated silhouette also creates a flattering effect on the finger.
- Marquise: A boat-shaped cut with pointed ends and a brilliant facet arrangement. Like the oval, it maximizes perceived size. However, it is prone to a "bowtie" effect — a dark shadow across the center — if not cut with precision.
- Emerald: A step-cut shape with a rectangular outline and cropped corners. Rather than maximizing sparkle, the emerald cut creates broad, mirror-like flashes of light called "hall of mirrors" reflections. Its large, open table makes inclusions more visible, so clarity is especially important.
- Cushion: A square or rectangular shape with rounded corners and larger facets that emphasize clarity and color. Cushion cuts come in two main styles — cushion brilliant and cushion modified brilliant — each producing a different light pattern.
- Pear: A hybrid of the round brilliant and marquise, the pear shape tapers to a single point at one end. It combines the brilliance of a round with the elongating effect of a marquise. Orientation matters: the point is traditionally worn toward the fingertip.
- Asscher: A square step-cut with deeply cropped corners, producing an almost octagonal outline. Like the emerald cut, it emphasizes clarity and produces a distinctive concentric square reflection pattern. It has an art deco aesthetic that reads as architectural and refined.
- Radiant: A rectangular or square shape that combines the facet structure of a brilliant cut with the outline of an emerald cut. It delivers strong sparkle in a non-round silhouette and is one of the more forgiving cuts in terms of hiding inclusions and color.
- Heart: A modified brilliant cut shaped into a symmetrical heart. It is technically demanding — both lobes must be equal in size and the cleft must be well-defined. It is the most emotionally expressive of all diamond shapes.
How Cut Quality Affects Light Performance
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) grades cut quality on a scale from Excellent to Poor (for round brilliants). Cut quality determines three key optical properties:
- Brilliance: The total amount of white light reflected back to the eye from both the surface and interior of the diamond. A well-cut diamond acts like a mirror system — light enters, bounces between the pavilion facets, and exits through the table directly toward the viewer.
- Fire: The dispersion of white light into its spectral colors (the rainbow flashes visible in a diamond). Fire is produced when light refracts at different angles as it exits the stone. Deeper crown angles tend to increase fire.
- Scintillation: The pattern of light and dark areas — the sparkle — that appears when the diamond, the light source, or the observer moves. A well-cut diamond has a balanced, dynamic scintillation pattern rather than large, flat dark zones.
Proportions, Symmetry & Polish
Cut quality is determined by a precise set of measurements:
- Table percentage: The width of the flat top facet as a percentage of the diamond's total diameter. For round brilliants, the ideal range is typically 54–58%.
- Depth percentage: The total height of the diamond (from table to culet) as a percentage of its diameter. Too shallow and light leaks out the bottom; too deep and light leaks out the sides.
- Crown angle: The angle of the upper facets relative to the girdle. This affects fire and the balance between brilliance and dispersion.
- Pavilion angle: The angle of the lower facets. This is the most critical measurement for light return — small deviations have a large impact on brilliance.
- Symmetry: How precisely the facets align and mirror each other. Poor symmetry misdirects light and creates uneven sparkle patterns.
- Polish: The smoothness of each facet surface. Microscopic polish lines or abrasions can scatter light and reduce overall brightness.
Carat: Weight, Size & Perceived Value
What Is a Carat?
A carat is a unit of mass used specifically for gemstones. One carat equals exactly 200 milligrams (0.2 grams). The term originates from the carob seed, historically used as a counterweight on balance scales due to its remarkably consistent mass.
Diamonds are weighed on highly calibrated electronic scales capable of measuring to the fifth decimal place. The weight is then expressed to two decimal places on grading reports (e.g., 1.02 ct).
The Points System
One carat is divided into 100 points. This allows for precise description of diamonds below one carat:
- 0.50 ct = 50 points ("half carat")
- 0.75 ct = 75 points ("three-quarter carat")
- 1.00 ct = 100 points ("one carat")
The points system is used by gemologists and dealers for precision; consumers more commonly hear the decimal or fraction form.
Carat Weight ≠ Visual Size
This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of diamond grading. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can appear dramatically different in size depending on:
- Shape: Elongated shapes (oval, marquise, pear) distribute weight across a larger surface area, making them appear larger face-up than a round brilliant of the same weight.
- Cut proportions: A diamond cut with a very deep pavilion carries much of its weight below the girdle — hidden in the setting. A shallower cut spreads that weight across the table, increasing the visible diameter.
- Girdle thickness: A thick girdle adds weight without adding visible size. Diamonds with very thick girdles may weigh more than their face-up appearance suggests.
Proportions & Face-Up Size
For round brilliants, there are well-established diameter benchmarks by carat weight under ideal cut proportions:
- 0.50 ct ≈ 5.0–5.2 mm diameter
- 1.00 ct ≈ 6.4–6.5 mm diameter
- 1.50 ct ≈ 7.3–7.4 mm diameter
- 2.00 ct ≈ 8.1–8.2 mm diameter
A poorly cut 1.50 ct stone may face up smaller than a well-cut 1.00 ct stone. This is why cut quality should always be evaluated alongside carat weight — the two are inseparable when assessing a diamond's visual impact.
Magic Weights & Pricing Thresholds
Diamond pricing does not increase linearly with carat weight. There are significant price jumps at certain "magic weights" — thresholds where consumer demand concentrates:
- 0.50 ct, 0.75 ct, 1.00 ct, 1.50 ct, 2.00 ct
A diamond weighing 0.98 ct may be priced meaningfully lower per carat than a 1.00 ct stone of identical quality — despite being visually indistinguishable. Savvy buyers often seek stones just below these thresholds to maximize value without sacrificing appearance.
This pricing dynamic is driven by market psychology and the symbolic weight of round numbers, not by any meaningful difference in the diamond itself.
